MSA is the only official motorsport federation in South Africa that is recognised both by government (through the Department of Sport, Arts & Culture as well as SASCOC), as well as the international motorsport authorities, being the FIA (car racing), CIK (karting) and FIM (motorcycle and quad sport). By virtue of its affiliation to government, MSA is able to assist race organisers to comply with legislative requirements such as the Safety at Sporting Events Act and Covid 19 regulations.
Through its affiliation with the FIA, MSA is able to access grant funding assistance, which has assisted with the re-surfacing of various local karting circuits, the training of officials and the hosting of Young Driver Academies.
Financial Stability and Sound Corporate Governance:
MSA (and its predecessors in title) has been the administrative and regulatory body for South African motorsport from grass roots to international competition for over 40 years and its staff have a wealth of experience in dealing with the needs of the sport.
The members of MSA are the clubs, associations and promoters that make the sport happen. The members have the right to elect directors to the MSA board, as well as appoint individuals to the various structures that administer motorsport around the country and take responsibility for the many different facets (categories) of the sport. This affords motorsport stakeholders the comfort of representation and knowing that their interests are taken into account in the administration of the sport.
MSA is financially stable and subject to an annual external audit and holds an Annual General Meeting every year, at which the company’s audited financial statements are tabled for approval by the members. MSA is a not for profit company and no profits of the company may be distributed. Accumulated reserves may only be used for the benefit of motorsport.
Transparency and sound corporate governance are cornerstones of how MSA conducts its business. MSA has never received a qualified external audit report since its inception.
Safety:
Safety is MSA’s first priority in the administration of motorsport. It therefore undertakes an ongoing process of monitoring and approving race venues to ensure that they are as safe as reasonably possible. For the same reason, MSA ensures that the regulations for the various categories of motorsport (which are compiled in conjunction with individuals involved in the particular category of motorsport) are written in order to ensure safety as far as reasonably possible.
Race officials:
MSA has access to a pool of race officials with proven ability and experience. Race officials receive training from MSA and MSA provides them with personal accident insurance cover on a free of charge basis when they work at motorsport events sanctioned by MSA.
Medical care:
MSA endeavours at all times to ensure that the people attending MSA-sanctioned motorsport events receive the best possible medical care when this proves necessary. This includes MSA having a Medical Panel in place (headed up by a medical doctor) and a system of accreditation of medical service providers.
Third Party Liability Coverage:
All motorsport events run under a MSA permit automatically enjoy a significant level of Third Party Liability insurance cover for competition-related incidents. This insurance cover protects all parties associated with a MSA-sanctioned event, notably event organisers.
Comprehensive Group Personal Accident Cover:
MSA arranges Group Personal Accident Cover for its competitors, accredited media personnel and officials, at very affordable premiums, and provides essential support with regard to the handling of the claims that arise in terms of this policy.
Administration: MSA administers all motorsport events from club to international level, compiles an annual calendar of motorsport events with input from all stakeholders, provides the rules to ensure fair competition and undertakes the scoring of a host of official club, regional and national championship series.
MSA arranges awards functions to recognise the winners of regional and national championships, and utilises its international ties to facilitate the participation of local competitors in international events.
Motorsport Colours:
MSA awards regional colours in recognition of motorsport achievements and makes recommendations to SASCOC in respect of the awarding of National Colours in respect of the recognition of motorsport achievements at the international level.
Communications Technology:
MSA provides a platform for competitors to publicise their achievements (thereby giving value to their sponsors) through its website and social media channels. It also uses these platforms, as well as an eNewsletter system to keep motorsport stakeholders updated as to developments in the sport.
MSA makes the obtaining of competition licences as easy as possible via a user-friendly online licensing system. The training of race officials is also made accessible through the use of online webinar formats.
Sport development:
MSA supports various programmes and initiatives aimed at improving diversity in the sport and making it as accessible as possible to the young people that are the future of the sport.
Responsible programs:
MSA is a responsible corporate citizen and was a pioneer in creating an Environmental Code with the aim of protecting the environment, with the view of safeguarding the sport into the future. MSA is also committed to a drug-free sport and cooperates with both the local and international bodies responsible for this aspect.
